FAQ

Funeral planning and urn purchase

Is it legal to purchase an urn directly from a manufacturer, even if you are dealing with a funeral home?

Yes. In fact, there is no obligation to purchase the urn from the funeral home with which you are doing business. You have the right to independently purchase the urn that best suits your needs and budget. You may purchase the urn from the provider of your choice and deliver it to the funeral home for funeral arrangements.

What are the factors we should consider to ensure that we choose an urn that meets our needs?

Before you decide to buy an urn, you need to think about what you want to do with the ashes of the deceased, where you want to keep the urn and what sight you want to give it.

Do you want to share the ashes with the family? Do you plan to bury them? Are you planning to display the urn during a memorial? Are you planning to display it in a niche in a columbarium? Do you want to scatter or bury  the ashes in nature? Many people prefer to keep the ashes in their home or garden.

When choosing a cremation urn, the following factors must be considered:

  • the destination of the ashes
  • the budget
  • the capacity
  • the dimensions
  • the personality and interests of the deceased if you wish to pay a personal tribute.

We offer a wide selection of custom, high-quality funeral urns. Their designs are versatile, timeless and durable. They are designed to honour the memory of the deceased in all circumstances.

What are the possible destinations of the ashes after a cremation?

Preservation of the ashes:

The ashes can be kept in a place of remembrance, in the home, in the garden or in a columbarium. You can keep a small amount as a keepsake for your loved one. Or you can divide the ashes among the family in miniature reliquary urns.

Burial of ashes:

Burial of the ashes is also an option. They are placed in an urn and buried in a place designated as a cemetery.

Scattering of ashes:

You may wish to scatter your loved one's ashes in a memorable place. Some people prefer to scatter the ashes. Then use the urn as a container to keep some small valuable items that belonged to the deceased. You may scatter the ashes on any private property. Provided you have permission from the property owner. For scattering on government land, you must obtain permission from the local authority.

What urn sizes are there and how to choose the most suitable one?

Before you decide to buy an urn, you need to determine the format you need. This will depend on the amount of ashes it will need to hold after cremation.

Are you looking for a standard size urn to hold the ashes of an adult or a smaller urn for a child or pet? Are you looking for a large urn for a larger person or for multiple family members? Or are you looking for multiple miniature urns to divide the ashes among family members? When choosing an urn for a loved one, you need to consider the capacity of the urn you are looking to purchase. As a general rule, you need one cubic inch of space for every pound of body weight. So if the deceased weighed 150 pounds, you will need an urn with a volume of at least 150 cubic inches.

Consult our Urn size guide to view the different sizes available and their respective capacities.

Should the dimensions of the urn be considered in addition to the capacity?

If you wish to display the urn at a memorial service, display it at home, bury it, or scatter the ashes, the dimensions are at your discretion. If, on the other hand, you are considering to display it in a columbarium, we recommend that you check with your funeral home in advance for specific dimensions to ensure that you meet the space requirements of the nichel in which you wish to display the urn.

How do you determine the right amount to invest in an urn?

Funeral urns come in different price ranges, and you must first determine how much you want to invest. Once you know how much you want to spend, it's easier to focus on other aspects of the buying process.

While there are many standard urns in the $350 to $600 range, if you have a larger budget ($600 or more), you can find high-quality, custom urns with more memorial value. The purchase price of these exclusive urns is usually more expensive than that of ordinary urns, as their custom design and handmade process require the use of noble materials of the highest quality, as well as much more labour. The price of these original collectibles and limited editions signed by creative artists varies depending on the uniqueness and complexity of each production.

Keep in mind that most funeral homes have only a small selection of urns for ashes and charge more for them. There can also be a significant price difference between an urn purchased online or directly from the manufacturer and the same urn at a funeral home. If you research prices in advance and try to avoid middlemen, you can be happy with your purchase.

Buying an exclusive urn directly from a manufacturer is a reasonable and affordable solution. If you want to invest in an urn that is specifically tailored to your needs to pay a distinctive tribute while benefiting from an excellent quality-price ratio, buying a Solart urn made entirely in our artist's studio in Canada is a good option for you.

Why is it a good idea to invest more in a unique art urn, even if the ashes are to be buried or scattered?

Buying a unique art urn is a bit like buying a ball gown so that the deceased can shine, despite his absence, by being represented one last time among his loved ones at a memorial service in his honour.

Before you make a decision about the amount you want to invest in the purchase of an urn, keep in mind that by deciding to invest a reasonable additional amount for the purchase of an artist-made urn, you can achieve the following:

  • Pay a personal tribute to the deceased by reflecting the beauty and uniqueness of his or her life in the urn, which will be displayed at a memorial service or celebration of life.
  • Giving loved ones the opportunity to say goodbye to the deceased and friends the opportunity to show their sympathy to the family at a memorial service in the presence of the urn on display.
  • Allow families to remember the history of the deceased by purchasing a permanent memorial object to pass on to their children if they wish.
  • Keep the ashes in your home to create a sense of closeness to your loved one by creating a private, intimate and permanent meditation space to help you begin the grieving process.
  • Create a place of worship open to the public by burying the urn in a cemetery or displaying the urn in a columbarium.

Why is it advantageous to choose an urn made of durable materials like porcelain?

Before you decide to buy an urn, you need to make sure that the material it is made of is suitable for the use you intend to put it to.

For example, did you know that most columbariums require that urns on display be made of solid and durable materials such as porcelain, metal or stone? Have you considered that if you are going to display the urn in a cemetery or outdoor gathering place, it is imperative that you choose an urn made of durable, non-porous material that can permanently withstand the elements?

Because porcelain is fired at very high temperatures in special kilns until the tesson is vitrified, it is the finest, densest and most solid type of ceramic that offers the best preservation properties. Because of its versatility, elegance and durability, porcelain is a natural mineral material of the highest quality, used for thousands of years for the manufacture of urns and funerary monuments.

Method to insert ashes into an urn

Once the cremation process is complete, the crematorium will return you the ashes back in a plastic bag in a temporary container. There are three different ways to transfer ashes into a cremation urn -  you can either transfer the whole bag with the ashes into the urn, pour the ashes directly into the urn, or pour the ashes from the container into a new plastic bag inside the urn..

Here are the steps you need to follow to safely insert the ashes of a loved into a funeral urn:

  1. You will first need to gather some useful tools such as a sheet of newspaper paper to deposit the urn on and another to create a funnel, gloves (optional), scissors, a towel and adhesive to seal the urn ( a clear silicone available in hardware is perfectly suitable for this use and will allow you to open the urn again if necessary).
  2. You will then transfer the ashes to the urn using your paper funnel.
  3. After inserting the ashes into the urn, gently remove the funnel to create more space for the ashes.
  4. Once you have inserted all the ashes, you can put the lid on. But if you want to seal the urn, prepare your seal for the next steps;
  5. Clean the urn opening and lid with a soft cloth;
  6. Place small silicone dots on the rim of the urn opening and on the lid;
  7. Then quickly seal the urn by placing the lid on the opening;
  8. Wipe off excess sealant before it dries.

Do you manufacture biodegradable urns that can be buried in an ecological cemetery?

In order to provide families with an environmentally friendly burial that meets the certification requirements of the Green Burial Society of Canada, we are currently developing new and innovative collections of exclusive memorial urns with biodegradable containers made from recycled paper fibres and porcelain. These urns, which can be buried in natural cemeteries and immersed in water, are ideal for honouring the lives of people who care about the environment, in a context of connection with nature.
